Distorted Images in IE 6.0

What is causing images in IE 6.0 to look distorted (pics
are made up of disjointed blocks - like when they hide
people's faces on "Cops")? I am running Windows XP. The
images are only distorted in my browser. All other images
(i.e. wallpaper, Adobe pics, etc.) are fine on my monitor.
I have searched high & low on how to correct this problem.
I would appreciate any input on how to solve this problem.
It is very annoying.
