Distinctive Ring detection

Joel Racicot

Hi everyone,

I've just upgraded a PC to Win2K for a charity. This PC
was previously running Win98. Win98 was becoming unstable
and was requiring a significant amount of my time with
reboots, hangs, etc.

This thing is used for a voice mail system (cheap and
simple) and has two modems chained together. The first
picks up the voice calls and the second is supposed to pick
up the fax calls. The phone line has an ident-a-call
feature, where the second line rings a double ring.

The issue is that, while in Win98 I was able to configure
the modems to so that the second would only pick up faxes,
I can't seem to find this in Win2k.

Can I still do this or do I have to go back to Win98?

Thanks

Joel

You'll probably have to return to Windows 98 because neither Windows 2000
nor Windows XP support Distinctive Ring.

The above is true, however, there are both third party hardware and software
products that solve this problem. Further, it is possible to modify the
modem driver so that the modem only answers a particular ring cadence.

The easiest answer is to get a hardware box that routes calls based on
distinctive ring cadence. Cost for a reliable device such as the ASAP DR400
may be about $ 100.
