Displaying .ico files as an icon

This has me beat.
I have an 'Icon' folder containing a collection of icons which I call upon
when I want to change the icons on various shortcuts.
Up until now, when opening the folder (or browsing to that folder via
'change icon'), they all displayed as the individual icon image.

Since upgrading ACDSee to ACDSee 6.0, they now all show only as an ACDSee
..ico image.
If I disassociate .ico from ACDSee, they then display as a normal
non-associated file, which is to be expected.

Now, my problem is that I have absolutely no idea what to permanently
associate these files to so they once again display correctly.

What also confuses the issue with me is that if I go to 'change icon' on a
shortcut, when it opens the default folder
(C:\WINDOWS\system32\SHELL32.dll), those ones display normally.
