i'm using microsoft 2002 but i have access to word 2007 so i would prefer an
answer that suits microsoft 2002. i'm making a document with about 15
footnotes per page. right now there is too much whitespace as most of the
footnotes are only 3 words long or so. i want the footnotes to appears as
such at the bottom of the page:

1. word word 2. word word word 3. word 4. word word
5 word word 6. word 7. word word

not as such

1. word word
2. word
3. word word

alas, this is not possible in Word with the built-in Footnote feature
(at least not to gain space, as Word will reserve the same vertical
space anyway).

You either have to live with how Word handles this, or create and manage
your own manually.
