Displaying desktop pictures

I am working from a Toshiba laptop with the Windows XP for Students software.
I have been able to use pictures from the My Pictures folder to display on my
desktop. I was changing the picture and something happened with my settings.
Under the Display folder on the Control Panel, it shows my chosen picture as
my desktop setting. However, on my actual desktop, the only thing that is
displayed is a solid color; no picture is being displayed.
How do I fix this? How do I make the chosen picture actually show up on my
desktop? Any help you can offer me would be fabulous!

possibly, the resolution on the picture is very high
and may not display. change the resolution to something
like 400x600 pixels and maybe the dpi to 75 or 150;
both are approximates thereof.
