Displaying an AVI file

XO can display AVI, Vista cannot

I have an AVI file which lasts approximately an hour. It can be
displayed in Windows XP Media Player, no problem

However, when I try Windows Vista Movie Maker, there is only sound and
a black image. And when I try Vista Media Player, it only displays
some moving colours which - I am sure - are not in the file.

What to do?

Download the appropriate codec...

You need to install the Divx codec. http://www.divx.com/

Hello José,

Download VLC from "www.videolan.org" freeware and plays nearly everything.

Download VLC from "www.videolan.org" freeware and plays nearly everything.

It doesn't. Sound only, black display.

Besides, this is a separate movie player, not a codec or similar
auxiliary program. Even if it plays the file, I am still struggling
with an unwilling Windows Media Player and Movie Maker.

BTW: Videolan and Movie Player show a black screen, Windows Media
Player shows all kinds of colours.

Try the GOM player. Media Player gets worse with each new version.

The first part of trying to deal with this sort of issue is identifying what
you are actually dealing with. Is a link to this troublesome AVI file
online? That would be easiest. Expecting that that's not the case-- what
codecs does this AVI file use? There are a number of utilities that can
provide you that data if you do not know.

The moving colours are the visualization showing up as the video cannot be
rendered given the missing decompressor/codec.

The AVI file is on a CD. How do I know what codecs it uses?

It probably will solve your problem playing movies.

That's not the problem. I can use Movie Maker and Media Player under
Windows XP. But I need to use these programs under Windows Vista.
