Display: white looks yellow...

I've been playing with Display under Control Panel,
including the advanced settings under Appearance. Hoping
to find a pale gray to replace the stark white window
screen for easier reading. Somehow, I've lost all ability
to get to white at all. Only pale yellow which even
appears on solitare cards and all areas that should be
white! Have I inadvertantly altered the colors in an area
I don't know about? I'd reset to default and start over,
but there doesn't seem to be that option in this
neighborhood.

My sympathies; that stark white is so annoying. Here is how to get to what
should be ALL the available colors, including custom-mixed colors. I hope
this works for you:

Start
Control Panel
Display
Appearance tab
Advanced button
Click the triangular arrow-button next to Color 1
Click Other...
Do you have white now? You can custom-mix an off-white shade using the
numbers beneath the rainbow-hued square.
