What exactly do you mean by "shrink my display?" Are you talking
about making your desktop icons smaller?
I suspect you are talking about changing your screen's resolution. If
this is the case, you can easily change it by right clicking on a
blank part of the desktop and then select Properties.
Click the Settings tab.
There should be a Screen Resolution slider. Move the slider to the
right for a larger desktop resolution (and smaller icons), and to the
left for the opposite.

If none of the previous posts help, it's possible that you might need to
download and install the latest (or at least a newer) Windows XP compatible
Display Adapter driver for your Display Adapter, from the manufacturer's web
site, usually found by clicking a Support, or Downloads, or Drivers link on
the first page of the web site.
Do you means the display is too wide/high so that part of the desktop and/or
icons are off the edge of the screen?
In which case see if the manual for your monitor explains how to adjust the
width or height. Usually this involves prodding some buttons on the front
panel.
