display stuck on 640x800

I have a dell dimension computer. I installed Visual
Studio .Net only to discover I would have to upgrade from
Windows XP Home to XP Professional for IIS and web related
work.

Now that I have run the upgrade, my display is stuck on 640
x 800 resolution and lowest (4bit) color. The drop downs
display no other options. I have tried using the
troubleshooter under Control Panel, and it invariably asks
me to click a button not visible under deisplay -> etc

Thsi computer used to run 1024 x1280 at 256 colors fine
under xp home. Can anybody help me?
