Display Resolution

When I went to control panel > display > settings
and tried to adjust colors and resolution ONLY one choice
and it was 16 colors .. period. I used to have several
selections and always liked 256 colors. I just reloaded
win2K and it came up (default) 16 colors but it does not
give me any choices, what should I do ?
