Display Power Settings Won't Stay Set

B

Bob L

I've set the display power settings to turn off the monitor after 3 minutes
of inactivity on my Win XP machine. But the setting won't say set! After
a day or two (seems random), the monitor does not shut off and I have to go
back and reset the power setting.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your posting and thanks for Kelly's help. This issue can occur
under several different situations. First I'd like to check if screen saver
appear after several minutes of inactivity.

Sometimes, a screen saver can cause this issue if it is configured with a
timeout value that is greater than that of the "turn off monitor" setting.
You may disable all the screen savers and test the problem again.

You may want to check this article to see if it applies:

309048 Your Monitor Stays On When You Use a Plus! for Windows XP Screen
Saver
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=309048

I'd also like to perform the following steps to trouble this issue further:

Verify that the "turn off monitor" option is set properly
===========

1.Press Start and choose Control Panel.

2.Double click Power Options.

3.Under "Settings for Home/Office Desk Power Scheme" set the "turn off
monitor" item as "After 3 mins".

4.Press OK.

Unplug all unnecessary devices
===========

1.Shut down the computer.

2.Unplug all the peripherals on the computer. (Including the USB devices,
the COM and LPT ports, and only leave the standard devices).

3.Test the problem again.

4.If this resolves the issue, please plug the devices one by one to narrow
down the issue.

Please feel free to let us know if anything is unclear or if you need
further assistance.
