Display photo in picturebox

I have a program in which a picturebox can display a photo (BMP, JPG of GIF).
Instead of displaying the photo, I only get a white box with a little red
cross in the middle.
The same program works fine under Windows XP.

What should I do to make this work?

Does that program use Java?
