Display New Mail Alert

Hello, I have Outlook 2003 stand alone version, and I run it with Office
2000 Pro. Outlook 2000 is not loaded. I would like some kind of pop up or
window to open when I receive new mail in my Inbox. I went to Tools>
Options> EmailOptions> Advanced Email Options and checked the box for
Display a New Mail Desktop Alert (default inbox only) I only have one Inbox
and I use it so it must be my default. Then I went to Desktop Alert
Settings> and set the Duration and Transparency. (solid for transparent) I
get new mail and nothing happens as far as an alert. I see the mail coming
in to my Inbox and I get a window if there is a Junk Email to check it. But
I have never gotten an alert. I looked it up in the help and followed the
directions. But I still do not get any kind of an alert. I do not have
Outlook check for mail automatically, I check for it manually by clicking
the Send /Receive button. I would like to have some kind of alert or pop up
when I get mail. My wife uses Outlook 2003 at work and they get a pop up
telling them they have new mail and who it is from. She is on a large
government network at work. We would like some kind of pop up or notify
window on ours at home too. If the one I am trying to configure is the wrong
one, something else would be fine.We use W2K Pro sp4 at home. Office 2000
Pro without Outlook 2000 loaded. Thanks for any help or advice.

That pop-up appears when Outlook initiates the send/receive. If you initiate
it, I believe the assumption was that you will be watching for what comes in,
and therefore don't need the alert. To get one anyway, set a rule to do that
at:
Tools> Rules and Alerts...
The result won't be the little temporary pop-up, but a dialog that will stay
up until you close it.

the alert is funky - it usually won't pop up if the active program is full
screen. You can set a rule for either a dialog style alert or for the
desktop alert.

Thank you Diane and IanRoy for your very quick answers. I will try and setup
a rule for the notification, again thanks.
