Display . and .. directories in Explorer

Basically, I wonder if it's possible to get the . and .. directories
displayed in any explorer window. I remember seeing that a long time ago, on
a Chicago beta (must have been late 1994), but after that, they vanished.
Now, I know they're there, as I know there's some little option somewhere in
the registry or explorer itself that hides these two. Does anyone know how to
display them?

There is actually no need since '.' equals the current directory and '..'
equals the parent directory. The "DIR" command still displays these two
directories and the "CD .." command still opens the parent directory.

In addition, the Win95/Win98/WinMe and WinNT File Manager (Winfile.exe)
display the '..' symbol which opens the parent directory as well.

Yes, I know they're there and I know exactly what they do, I've been using
DOS since version 3, thanks. I also know that the old file manager displays
them under the Windows versions you mentioned, and even if I run winfile.exe
on my current Windows 2003, it will still show.

Thanks for pointing that out, hadn't ever noticed that option. However,
that's not what I want. I'd like to be able to open explorer on any old drive
or directory (without the directory tree showing), and see two more icons,
one with one dot under (or beside) it, and one with two dots. Okay, the
single-dot one would be rather useless, except maybe informing me of when
that parent directory was created (on detail view), but the double-dot one
would allow me to go up in the directory structure without having to have
that annoying toolbar button that reads "up", and which would be the
equivalent of the "cd.." command that Detlev was so eager to point out, and
which I can't use since explorer doesn't accept keyboard commands.

Any ideas?

Sure it does: press the Backspace key to go up a folder. Don't worry, it
won't delete anything.
 
You know... I don't mean to be rude here, but... am I not writing in English?
I know about the backspace key as well, and I know well enough that it won't
delete anything, thanks so much for the tip. Do I seem like I just switched
on my first computer? As I'm pretty confident that you knew what I meant when
I said "explorer doesn't accept keyboard commands" --read: 'dir' or 'xcopy'.
I don't need alternatives, I think I was very specific in my question. If
you have no answer, no disrespect to Kelly who was the only who at least
tried, just don't post! Really, I don't need the "you know, you don't really
need it" or "sure, press 'back' button, it will do the same" kind of answers.
Anyhow... thanks to all the guys that bothered reading my post.
