Display Adapter

Dave

Hi all,

I've just tried to update my 256mb Radeon x1300 display adapter using the
latest Vista Ultimate driver as advised by Windows Update. Since then I've
had nothing but trouble. Firstly the "Windows Update" driver failed to load
at all after several attempts. Next, I went to the ATI site & downloaded the
latest Vista driver for the card. That installed but after rebooting all
"man-made" icons on my Desktop & other shortcuts are now partially blacked
out by a black square blocking most of the shortcut icons. I uninstalled all
ATI drivers & tried again. After doing that, in the Device Manager under
Display Adapters the device showed up as a VGA adapter (working correctly),
but also showed under "Other Devices", an unknown device, Location: on
Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System. In the device status it says: This device
is not configured correctly. (Code 1)

There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

The Display adapter is now back to the original x1300 driver, but the (Code
1) error under "Other devices" is still listed under 'Unknown Device' & the
shortcut icons still have black squares covering most of the icon.

I hope I've explained myself properly & someone can help me to get rid of
these black squares on my shotcuts & the Unknown Device in the Device
Manager.

I read somewhere that the ATI x1300 256mb video card is not ideally suited
to Windows Vista, so if anyone knows of a decent video card that IS suited
to Vista, I'd like to hear from you.

Thanks in advance,

Dave.

Dave:

This is something I can talk about. Vista in general NO,
but ATI cards YES.

The ATI site doesn't have the Vista drivers YET, they only have
ther BETA driver and they say, "Do not install on mission critical
systems". ATI also recommends that their previous drivers MUST
be uninstalled before updating to a new driver.

As for the X1300, it should work with Vista, when the
Vista drivers are available. I have a X1650pro, works well
but a X1900 series would work better. Be prepared to pay though
and make sure the cooling system is first rate in your system.
The X1650pro that I use has its own fan but still generates
a lot of heat.
As for the black squares, I just don't know ! Haven't had that
problem.
Suggestion: Uninstall all drivers for ATI, apply a VGA driver
for your system then install the Beta (??) driver, remembering
it's only BETA. http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/vista32/common-vista32.html
As for 'Windows Update' supplying a driver update,
I would like to know where they got it from ! Not ATI that's
for sure.

Also, the BETA driver only works for RC2 & RTM versions of Vista....

Best of luck, I know it's frustrating but keep at it.

Your system should have a 'generic/standard VGA driver'.
You may have to swap the display cable to the on-board
adaptor, install the Beta Vista driver, then swap the cable
back to the ATI card.
Sounds round about but it took me some time to manage as well.
