Diskless PC? BootP to XP

R

Randall

I need to learn how to setup a diskless PC to use Boot Prom to connect to a
Win2003 server and load WindowsXP (from Terminal Services I guess).

What I need in the end, is a diskless PC that runs WinXP.

Can anybody point me in the right direction for information?

Thanks,

Randy

Carey, what I believe the OP is looking for is a way to run XP on a computer
as a dumb terminal that doesn't have a hard drive on the machine but use the
computer's processing power to do data crunching or input. The OS and
programs would be stored on the server and deliver its code segments when
needed by the network.

IIRC Novel networks could be set this way, as could the old ArtiSoft
Lantastic network system but not with today's newer OSs.

I personally don't think that this can be done with XP, but there are more
intelligent people out there than me, so I could be wrong. I did use this
arrangement a number of years ago with a mainframe system (many terminals
and one processor but all processing was done on the mainframe.)

Check out this product http://www.clearcube.com it may be more then what you
are looking for but, it is worth the cost. I tried a couple of years ago to
setup a windows bootp pc but to no avail. I was able to image a pc but not
run the computer in a diskless mode.

Good luck!

If you have Windows 2003, and you setup Terminal Server, you can used
Windows CE based thin-clients to connect to the Terminal server using
Remote Desktop - this means that for about $375 you can purchase a
Terminal without disks and connect to the Terminal Server where the apps
run on a virtual XP like desktop.

I just bought 10 of the NeoWare units below and the method, on a fast
terminal server, means you can buy 1 strong server and then cheap
terminals that when rebooted come back with the config you programmed
into it - nice for keeping people from making changes to the terminals.
