I am getting a boot up error message that says diskette drive 1 seek failure,
though when I check the device manager it says the drives are working
properly. There are no driver upgrades. Dell Gx1 partitioned harddrive,
win xp, 454 MHZ.

Can anyone tell me what that indicates??

From Dell's web site:

"Diskette drive 1 seek failure"
Definition: Diskette controller could not locate specific sector or track.
Probable causes: Faulty or improperly inserted diskette, incorrect
configuration settings in System Setup (BIOS) program, loose diskette
interface cable, or loose power cable.
