Disk write problem

I just added an older 40gb IDE drive as a slave to use for storage. Copying
small files to it .. no problem. Anything bigger than 2mb and progress
stops, the "countdown" stops, when I can get task manager to come up, cpu
shows 100% use, then I usually have to hit reset to recover. Sometimes
afterwards the D drive doesn't show up in windows at all, until I shut down
for a few minutes and reboot. I ran chkdsk, and it found some bad sectors
and marked them, but didn't help the problem. Could the on-disk cache be
bad, or what else might it be? Using XP SP2.
Thanx.
