Disk read error when installed on NTFS Drive

I am trying to install Windows XP on my computer, I put the disk in, boot
into the installer and get up to the screen where I set up my partitions. I
tell setup to create one partition and when the installer asks which file
system to format the partition with, the only option is NTFS. I select NTFS,
the drive formats, files are copied for the rest of setup. I reboot without
the CD and then I get a Disk Read Error. The computer tells me to reboot. I
do, the same thing happens. There is no option on the partition setup to use
a FAT partition. Can someone please help me out here?
