disk failure after dynamic disk conversion

PLEASE HELP!

I converted a hard disk from basic to dynamic running
under Windows XP. I was asked to reboot my computer to
complete the conversion. However, upon reboot, the disk
became unreadable, giving the following error message:

"missing or corrupt file: c:windows/system32/hal.dll"

The error message is a little misleading since not only is
that file not accessible, but the entire disk is
unreadable.

So far, I have tried several methods to no avail. I have
even installed a new hard drive into this computer and
installed windows 2000 on the new hard drive in the hope
that I would be able to access the old hard drive.
However, under the disk management tool, the old hard
drive appears as "Dynamic Unreadable".

I am aware that converting the dynamic unreadable drive
back to basic will probably destroy all the data on it.

Any ideas on what I can do to recover data on my old drive?

Please HELP!!!!!
