disk drive lockup on battery power

Is there anyone who has experienced the disk
drive "locking up" the system with so many small slow
accesses while the lap top is on battery power? As soon
as I plug it back into the AC power the performance
returns to normal.
 
Yes, exactly the same symptoms. Task manager shows CPU usage between 50% - 100% and everything slows down.
 
Following my last post - Task Manager shows that the taskmgr.exe and EXPLORER.EXE suddenly jump up to 15-20% processor activity each when I unplug the mains lead. Plugging it back in they go back to 0. Anybody any thoughts?
