How do I get Disk defragmenter to start up using " Schedule Tasks". I
want it to run automatically at certain times. Additionally I have a
partitioned drive so I want it to do both sections.

Thank you

Following the above article, I think this would work:

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools >Scheduled Tasks > Add Scheduled Task -

Once in the Wizard where you are supposed to choose what program, click on the Browse button -

Navigate to and click on C:\Windows\System32\dfrg.msc -

Click on open -

Set the desired time fram and click on next and enter password if you use a password to log on to windows -

Click on finish -

See if it works

I guess it would be better to highlight and open C:\Windows\System32\defrag.exe instead of dfrg.msc -

dfrg.msc does open as scheduled but does not start the defragmentation process without user input -

It appears that defrag.exe is not running as I scheduled it - I guess just follow the advice in

Thank you for the help. Using the web page from Microsoft/Support it
seems to run it in a DOS window and gives the Analysis Report. Not
sure if it is actually running the defrag of the hard drive.

Any more advice ?

Thank you again

There are two defrag tools in XP.

dfrg.msc that's the pretty one that opens from
Start\All Programs\Accessories\System Tools.

defrag.exe the command line tool that runs in the command prompt.
defrag.exe is the one that you can scedule.
