disk defragmenter

Hi a few days ago I did a clean instalation of windows xp sp2, and yasterday
I used a disk clean up, but when a tried to use disk defragmenter it's open
as a notepad file, how I can get that back without reinstal windows again?

What happens if you double click My Computer/Right click your C
drive/Choose properties/Tools tab/Defragment button?

Right click on dfrg.msc in the System folder. Select Properties and
Change. The recommended Programme should be Microsoft Management
Console.

It sucks anyway, so download contig.exe from http://sysinternals.com
and run it in the form off
contig c:\*.* -s
Which will defrag your disk and subdirectories. You can also put it in
a batch file that will clean on regular basis, let me know if you need
more examples.

After reading your post, I downloaded contig.exe and have started
using it. It is GOOD. I have a couple of questions, please.
Will running contig.exe in safe mode do a still better job?
Does contig.exe optimize free space?

HUH? According to their website, Contig is a SINGLE FILE
defragmenter, not a disk defragmenter.

I think you'd better go there ane read about it some more.

I know it is a "file defragmenter". On one of the drives drives (used
mostly for storing old files which don't change) there were only a
handful of fragmented files, including one used by copernic desktop
search, but windows-xp defrag showed fragmentation of free space also.
I used contig.exe for defragmenting the files, and when I later
"analyzed" using windows defrag, free space also showed 0%
fragmentation. The fragmented files were probably splitting up free
space.
