How can I start the Disk Defragmenter program remotely? I have
approximately 400 XP machines spread across several subnets, and would
eventually like to set this up on a schedule of like once every 6 months.

Create a scheduled application: in the run perameters use
'C:\WINDOWS\system32\defrag c:'. Schedule it to run as you see fit.

You can add it to your machine, then browse to each machine and copy the
task. You'll see 'Scheduled Tasks' if you browse to the machine
(\\computername) it'll appear as 'Scheduled Tasks on computername'.

Enrigue,

There is no network management component to the built-in defragmenter.
However, you could use remote control software to connect to a remote system
and then run the built-in defragmenter or create a script to schedule the
built-in defragmenter on that system. However, with 400 remote systems, I
can't imagine that this would be too fun :)

Network management is one of the reasons that 3rd party defragmenters exist.
