Disk Defragmenter in Vista

Any idea how to select an individual disk (such as drive D: or E: or C to be defragmented, rather
than the whole PC ?

Start Orb...type cmd...right click..select Run as Administartor.
In command prompt...type defrag /?

You will get a list of options

ex defrag d: -w -v

type 'defrag' (without the quotes) into the search box in the start menu.
When the disk defragmenter appears at the top of the programs box click on
it to open defragmenter. in the disk defragmenter window click the 'select
volumes' button. Now just de-select any drive you don't want defragmenting.
Finally click OK and defrag will defragment only the drive(s) you've
selected.

I typed, in the search box, in Start menu, the word 'defrag' and hit Enter -
The 'Disk Defragmenter' menu showed up with the following list -

a) Run on a schedule (recommended) .....with the ..... 'Modify schedule'

b) 'Scheduled defragmentation is enabled'.... with the ....'Defragment now'

None of them shows how to choose a drive, either C: or D:
What am I missing?

I really prefer Auslogics Disk Defragger to the internal Vista defragger.
It's fast, free and gives you the ability to select which drives you want to

Question - what is -w -v means?
How do I know that I am defragging the D: drive?

-w = full defrag
-v= verbose

with the -v, you should see a report prior and subsequent to the defrag...it
will say what drive.
You will not get any feedback during the defrag...no percent complete.

If you type defrag /? ...it will give you other switches.

Not sure what that does...the graphics are nonsense...colors jump all over
the place.
It also is supposedly using the internal defrag anyway...maybe faster cause
you can give it "higher" priority ?

Apparently it does not tell me which drive it is defragging.
Since I allocated the D: drive, hopefully it is defragging the D: frive.

Seems like I have to wait for the SP1 update.

Right. The system doesn't tell you what drive it is defragging; you tell the
system.

doing. Many people like it, others may not. I'm neutral about it.

either way. All I know is that it is definitely faster than Vista's
internal defrag and it gives you much more control over what to do. Try it
yourself - you'll see.

Read it somewhere when I first tried it.
Obviously I've used it...as I've seen the silly colored boxes jumping around
like a random number generator.
It is fast...whether it actually increased performance....?
My HD's score a 5.9 on the Performance scale...maybe it only makes a
difference on slow PC's.

My apologies I forgot that SP1 was on this particular machine.

An alternative is to defrag from the command prompt. Click the Start button
and type 'cmd' in the search box. When the 'cmd.exe' file appears right
click on it and choose 'run as administrator' When the command prompt opens
type defrag C: (or D: whichever drive you want to defrag) and then press
Enter. Jut remember it may takes some time to defragment the drive.

As for SP1 Microsoft are expecting a release of the service pack within the
first quarter of this year, so you may only have two or three months to
wait.

User66 'Don't' install SP1 it is still in beta and is buggy at best, it
could cause other problems. Unless you have a machine specifically allocated
for testing beta software, keep well away.
