Just went through disk cleanup procedure and tried to start defragment.
Received an error message that defragmenter could not start. Have not a
clue what to do next.

Any help would be appreciated.

I usually read these postings, not to offer solutions but to try to learn
and understand how things work. I especially benefit from the replies from
posters who detail what they did to solve their problems. Since I received
no replies i kept trying different things on my own and managed to resolve
the problem. If anyone is interested and can understand what actually
happened I would appreciate some insight. This is what I did to fix it:

After trying Safe Mode, system restore, sfc, etc.. without success I
downloaded a trial version of "Defrag for windows"; installed it and
executed it. It ran (looked like in a dos shell) for about 1 to 2 hours. I
then rebooted and the Windows XP defrag stated to work. Of coure the drive
was already defragged and it merely analyzed the drive.

I hope this is of use to someone.

Keep up the good work.
