ok, so i got on and read all the posts for defragmenting but nothing so far
has given me an answer to the problem. i defrag and i get te message...
"Some files on this volume could not be defragmented. Please check the
defragmentation report for the list of these files." I have gone back and
emptied temp files, i have scanned disk and rescanned disk. 80% of my hard
drive is free. i even went as far as doing a hard drive self test and i still
et the same message after i defragment. when I go see the report to see what
files wont defrag i dont see any files at all. what do i do now?
thanks in advance for any help at all!

Don't worry about it. Some system files won't allow themselves to be
defragmented while Windows is running.

Stop worrying over it and move on.

Being condescending to a newbie is rude & uncalled for; if your
interpersonal skills are suffering why not just avoid responding until you
feel better? Unless this is the only mode you can operate in .

Actually, that's a question that comes up every once in awhile. It's normal
because there are some certain files that cannot be defragmented. So,
nothing to worry about. Eventually your level of expertise may rise and it
might make more sense then, but you should be OK ignoring it.

How was that *rude* or *condescending*?
I would like you to explain that to me - since there was nothing rude in my
response.

Assumptions...?

yeh,
some files are locked down and
cannot be moved. defraggers
see this as an error because they
failed to access them. but the
files are accessiable and are "exclusively"
used by windows.

if you want to you can use other defraggers
too. there is one provided in systemmechanic
program

and there is a free one that i use when i
get bored with the regular windows defragger.
it is called O&O Defrag 2000

these other defraggers may give
you a better perspective of your
file system.

there are other defraggers too
that defrag your registry hives and
another that defrags the boot up files
and moves to the head of the file system
for super fast bootups...

but further explanation of this is
in your next lesson 201 defrag class.

have fun....

made with fools gold.

surely, respect is a commodity that
is no longer valuable as gold..

Hi there,

I personally like Diskeeper, this has automatic defragmenting in it and also
has the ability to do a boot defrag which allows files that can't be moved in
normally operation as they are in use by Windows.
