disk cleanup

I am having problems with my computer. It is running really slow. When I try and run the disk cleanup it either does nothing or shows activity up to three bars then seems to get stuck. Got any ideas of whats wrong?

disk cleanup won't function. Cannot remove temporary internet files either. Please help
