Disk cleanup

My system, XP is really slowing down and in try to do some needed maintence
to it, I am trying to run disk cleanup however it gets stuck. the status bar
sits at abuot 3% and will not make any progress no matter how long I let it
run. anyone have any suggestions. Hp pavillion,windows XP pro.1.2 celleron
256sdram memory 40gig hard.???? any help would be appriciated..

Try the Wizard again, only this time uncheck "Compress old files". That step
has been known to take seemingly forever, and it's not a good idea if you're
cleaning the system partition.
