Disk Cleanup

A friend of mine is having a problem with the "Disk Cleanup" app for WinXP
on her pc.
I have tried to use it myself on her machine but all it does is open the
dialog box and just sit there.
I have let it run for more than an hour with no movement.
Would it help if I used the run command of cleanmgr?
Any ideas?
