disk cleanup

When I use disk cleanup and you check or uncheck the boxes for what you want
to remove the compress old files does not clean out. It just keeps getting
larger and larger. I have tried it checking and unchecking the box. It never
empties. Is this normal?

Hi Wesley I went to windows/system32. I don't see a chkdsk or defrag with an

chkdsk-defrag. Do I need to look else where or will the work? Also the disk
cleanup I scheduled did not work.

Hi Phil,
I find chkdsk and defrag but
neither have the (.exe) extension following them.

You have extensions set to be hidden. Which can be a bad thing, but I won't
go into that now.

Open Folder Options...
Click Start | Click Run | Type: control folders | Click OK |
Click the View tab | Click on Hide extensions for know file types to REMOVE
the check mark | Click Apply | Click OK
It just has an icon
that looks like a dishwasher front door

LOL I never thought of that but your right, that's what it looks like.
That icon means the program has no Graphical User Interface (GUI) like you
would see if you open dfrg.msc from Start\All Programs\Accessories\System
Tools. Those types of programs have to be opened from a Command Prompt or
the Run command. If you double click any of those icons, they will just
flash the Command Prompt window briefly and do absolutely nothing else.

Cleanmgr.exe is Disk Cleanup.
Error Checking is chkdsk.exe also called the Check Disk Utility.
Disk Defragmenter is defrag.exe also called Disk Defragmenter Module.
All three are in Windows\System32.

You do not have to open Windows\System32 to schedule Defrag or Error
Checking (chkdsk.exe).

You just have to use the Browse button to navigate to Windows\System32 and
each of the .exe files.

I'm not meant to get this to work I guess. I did what I needed but when I
tried to do it I got “0x80070005: Access is denied" error message when you
create a scheduled task in Windows XP Service Pack 2. The hot fix is not yet
available. I tried the gpedit.msc and it says windows can not find it. So I
think I may have to be in a wait mode. I will print the error code and check
at end of month for the fix. Thank you VERY VERY much.

I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination! But unless you only have one
hard drive containing only one partition, I don't know that it is actually
possible to schedule disk cleanup to run automatically, as you have to choose
which partition or hard drive you want it to check once the program has
started.

I know I tried to schedule it once, but like you, I found that although I'd
browsed to the correct disk cleanup exe file, the program would not run -
possibly for the reason stated above?

Sorry I coudn't be more help.
