disk cleanup

can anyone help? I've been running disk cleanup for 22 hours and it has been
scanning compress old files all this time. Is this normal or has something
gone wrong with disk cleanup? Usually disk cleanup only takes me about 20
mins.!

cancel disk clean up
empty the recycle bin
then delete temp files manually and clear history from "internet options"
in the control panel
