Disk Cleanup

Disk cleanup says that I can free up 1,257,000 by
checking Compress Old Files. Is this advisable? Will I
lose possibly important?

You can see what files will be compressed (click the View Files button) and
then make your own decision.

The files are compressed, not deleted.

Some users report that Compress Old Files takes a very long time - more than
an hour - and sometimes it can cause a computer to stop responding
altogether. For these reasons, you may not want to do this.

If you have software that you no longer use, you are better off by simply
uninstalling it. If you have documents that you have not viewed in a long
time, and probably won't need to view in the future, you could transfer them
to a CD or DVD.

Yes Rocky,I agree,but I've found that the one's that
freeze-up are the inpatient one's that won't let it run
thru, kick it off after it runs for an hour or less, the
first time you must let it run all the way thru (unless
you dont check the box). When I set up a box for someone I
run it and let it go.Some with smaller processores take 3
hours. But after I do that,no one ever comes back and
say's it's a problem. It's the ones that cancel half way
thru, and corrupt the registry file. The good old fashion
way of going into the registry and deleteing the corrupt
file.Thank goodness for line 48.

Unless you are pressed for disk space, I would suggest that you un-check
compress old files in disk cleanup. If those files are needed, it takes time
to un-compress them and there is always a chance that files will become
corrupted when they are compressed and expanded. There is a registry hack to
remove compress old files from the cleanup utility. I can't find it off
hand, perhaps someone else can chime in here and offer a link to one of the
MVP's sites that offers it as a script download. It makes a world of
difference in the time required to run disk cleanup.

Kellys Korner,do a google search,I think tho it removes
the compressed files all together.

No, it does not remove any files. It only prevents cleanup from offering to
compress.

Line 48 is not the script I had in mind. Someone offers it as a simple
download but,
here is the registry hack to eliminate compress old files from the clean-up
utility. I don't know who the author is but, thanks to them.

Speedup Cleanup

step 1 Click Start, Run. In Windows 2000 or XP, type Regedt32.exe and
click OK.

step 2 In Regedt32, select the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE pane, then select the
Software folder. Pull down the Registry menu, and click Save Key to back up
this folder for safekeeping.

step 3 Double-click each folder to open the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ ...cont. next
line
\Explorer\VolumeCac-hes\Compress old files.

step 4 In the right pane, double-click the REG_SZ key to edit it. Save the
value in case you wish to restore it later. It reads
B50F5260-0C2111D2-AB56-00A0C9082678. Press Delete to remove the value, then
click OK. Close Regedt32.

Now right-click a hard drive in My Computer or Windows Explorer. Click
Properties, then Disk Cleanup. The utility will zoom along, skipping the
usual compression analysis. You'll hardly have time for that last cup of
coffee.

I apologize for any confusion my other posts may have caused.
