Disk Cleanup hangs

After selecting drive C on the Disk Cleanup this dialog
box pops up:

"Disk Cleanup is calculating how much space you will be
able to free on (C.
Cancel (button)"
I can hear the HD is busy for about ten minutes.
Then the HD is quite and cleanmgr.exe hangs the CPU at
100%.
I let CPU go 100% for two hours, and then I click the
Cancel button.
Cancel does not work, so I end the process from Window
Task Manager.

This is my first time using Disk Cleanup so I am not sure
what to expect. What is going on here?

have little experience with the registry. Could you
please tell me what "REGEDIT4" and "Merge" mean?

I use Registry Editor version 5 SP4.
