Disk Cleanup Compress Old Files

I don't remember ever turning on compress old files.
Every time I try to run disk cleanup, it begins
immediately the process of compressing old files. How do
I stop it without waiting for it to complete the
compression process?

Is this as soon as you click on the Disk Cleanup icon and before it displays
the options? If so, then this is normal behavior as if you look closely, it
is only scanning for "Compress old files". It does this among other things
to have an accurate report about how much disk space is being used with
compressing old files.

The following Microsoft Knowledge Base Article explains a workaround that, if
implemented, removes the option to Compress Old Files (although written for Windows
XP, the resolution also works for Windows 2000).
