Hi everybody,

I tried to run disk cleanup as I normally do on a regular basis. This time
however, it simply stalls. I noticed that it occupies some 99% of the
processor ressources.

difficult to relate this phenomenon to anything I may have done.

indeed, lately I installed, then uninstalled different and reputedly
"straight" utilities. Impossible to know which one, if any, could be the
cause of such a problem.

I tried to use the SFC /scannow feature, but Windows didn't accept my
original Dell CD. Wrong disk, it said.

anything I could check / try ?

I am using Win XP Home ed ition SP 1. I didn't bother yet to install SP 2.

many thanks in advance for your kind help.

best regards,

Daniel

you might try running
it in safemode...

Hello William,

thank you so much. I did what was indicated in the first KB article, and it
worked !

I have another major problem. I just don't know what happened today. I
wonder if you could help :

my PC doesn't see any more my DVD and CD R/W drives.
in device manager there is a yellow exclamation mark near each of these
drives, and an indication of Windows not being able to load the
corresponding pilots which, according to what's indicated in the property
box, could be missing or corrupted.

I restored to a previous date, to no avail.
I tried to uninstall each device, then reboot to reinstall. No change.

do you have any idea ?

again, thks for your time and good help.
Brgds,
Daniel

Sounds like your CD and DVD has lower and upper filter issues in the
registry. Follow this KB article to possibly correct the issue.

You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an
error message after you remove a CD recording program or a DVD recording
program in Windows XP: "error code 31"

Dear William,

I most grateful. Thanks to you everything is now working. Better than before
in fact.

I followed the instructions indicated in the KB article you mentioned.

Right after the operation I "recuperated" both drives, but I got another
problem: the mouse was not working anymore. I tried several things to no
avail.
I finally succeeded in lauching the Restore utility (not easy without a
mouse), restoring to a previous date, restarted the PC and, strangely
enough, it worked.

This is something I don't understand:
when I first had the problem with the drives, I restored the registry, to a
backup I knew to be OK. How come it didn't work?
then I did the changes to the registry according to the KB article. It
worked, except for the mouse.
so I restored to a 2 days-old registry backup, meaning that the changes made
to 'repair' the drives were cancelled.
I restart the PC and every thing is OK !

well, I don't wish to bother you, William, but if you have an explanation to
give me...

Many thanks again for your time and kind help.

very best regards.
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

I am glad you have everything working and you are most welcome.

On the other hand, I am not sure what caused this. How did you backup the
registry that you thought to be OK? This may give me more insight to the
problem.

Hi William.

thank you for your concern.

I always backup the registry using Regedit > export. Whenever I want to
download and try a particular application or utility, I do this beforehand.

for your information, the program I downloaded before I had these problems
was 'TweakXP Pro".

What are these Lower and Upper filters for in the registry ?

many tks again, William.
best,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Backing up the Windows XP Registry using the export method is not very good
and unreliable. This /may/ have caused your problems. I use ERUNT which
backs up the registry complete and correctly. Very easy to restore the
Registry using ERUNT as well. You can download ERUNT (free) from here:

http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/

Be sure to read the Information page for ERUNT on how to restore the
Registry.
http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/erunt.txt

The Upper and Lower filters are for the your CD/DVD drives. I believe they
are used for burning CD/DVDs. If you use third-party burning software, you
/may/ have to reinstall the third-party software after following KB314060
instructions because some third-party program will modify the Upper and
Lower filters.

I have never used TweakXP Pro so I cannot comment on this program.

You're most welcome Daniel.

This is definitely a good N.G., visited and supported by great people.
Thank you again, William, for your time and comprehensive and thorough
explanations.

With best regards,
Daniel
