Disk Activity when nothing apparent is running

I have recently noticed that my laptop disk runs in short bursts for a few
seconds to quite a few seconds at a time for no apparent reason. I have tried
to find the source but can’t seem to locate it. No virus found, tracking
stuff removed by Adware, etc.
No applications up and running. The laptop seems to be working fine, except
for this event. The system only has basic software Office, Adobe, etc.
Any suggestion how to isolate this event to see what is causing it?

What is the Windows XP Prefetch?

XP has Indexing service turned on for each hard drive, automatically.

If you wish to disable the Indexing Service, perform the following:
Go to Start > Run and type: SERVICES.MSC , and hit enter.
Scroll down to the "Indexing Service", right-click on it and select
Properties and set the Startup Type to Disabled, then click Apply.

Nothing to worry about. Assuming you are virus/spyware free.
