Disconnecting

How can I stop my internet connection from disconnecting when I leave
it for a while? I looked under Tools-Internet Options-Connections-
Settings-Advanced, and found a box with a check in it "disconnect if
idle for X minutes". I took the check out of the box, but the next
time I left the computer for a while, it disconnected again. Then I
saw that it said "Automatic configuration may override manual
settings. To ensure the use of manual settings disable automatic
configuration." How/where do I do that?

I know of three causes for the vast majority of such problems:
1. Incompatible add-ons: go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | System
Tools | Internet
Explorer (No Add-ons).

2. With the warning that a reset will delete autocomplete data, such as
passwords and you will have to reinstall browser add-ons, work through this

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

There would be one in your modem settings but check with your ISP.
It may be expected, so they will be able to tell you if this is intentional.

Thanks, Frank. I wouldn't make any drastic changes without checking
with my computer tech
(I have to see him this week anyhow), but I wanted to respond to two
of the things you suggested:

Sorry, that sent before I meant it to. I was going to say (1) that
when I go to Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools, there is
no Internet Explorer listed. and (2) that I do have what I understand
to be a very good anti-virus, anti-spyware program - Webroot Spy
Sweeper (with a.v.)
