Disc space not reported correctly

I have been finding that after deleting large files in win xp pro,, the
deleted space is not reported in windows explorer. In othe words if
there is 8 gb free on the drive and I delete a 4 gb file, the free space is
not increased to 12 gb. Any ideas???

is the space available for use even if it isn't reported?
