disc drive

When I put a CD into the disc drive, nothing happens.
When I go ro run, and type, it still says insert CD

Is there something I have to configure to make the Pc recognize there is a
disc in the drive, or is my CD drive effed? And if it is, are they easy to
replace?

Is the drive seen in the BIOS? Does it work if you try it in another
machine? Can you boot with any bootable cd (like your Windows install cd or
Knoppix)?

If the answers to any of those questions is "no" then the drive is dead.
Swap it out for a known-working one to be sure. CD/DVD-ROM drives are very
inexpensive and easy to replace.
