I periodically run these utilites but have never done so on the drive tha
contains the operating system. Should I run and with fix automatically
checked? What about defrag?

TIA

Funny! I have two partitions on my internal disc and an external
USB disc and the only one I ever defragment is the system
partition. Once in a long while, I check the states of the other
discs but they have not needed defragmentation in a year.

Run the Disc cleanup at the minimum of once per week, depending
on system usage. Just check what you clean/delete before you
actually delete it. It does not go to the Recycle Bin.
Defrag - maybe every two or three months.

I do as you suggest on the main drive i.e. the one with programs and files
but not on the smaller drive. Should I be doing both?

Thanks

I am assuming Windows XP of course. What does the defrag program
suggest if you tell it to analyze? IMHO, you can usually go
along with that. One small caveat, you need a reasonable amount
of free space for defragging to work. However, if it fails it
does not seem to matter and the trouble is often caused by an
accumulation of temporary files that *can* be deleted. See

"Once a week" for disk cleanup? Why so often? I've found that
quarterly is sufficient in a business environment.
