I think I'm right when I say, it is still working, even if it looks like it
has stopped. Compressing old files is a very long job, (couple of hours
maybe) even on a fast machine. I see no reason - if you want to carry on -
doing this part of clean-up a bit at a time. If you have plenty of disc
space, I see no point in hanging around. You can, of course, omit it
altogether.
This may seem odd to some people out there, but I have
this problem too. I have to unplug my ethernet cable when
I do a scandisk, or disk clean up. I haven't really looked
around to see why this is like this, but I've had several
computers (XP, and 2k) that acted this way.
