Disc Cleanup

I hope I haven't overlooked this but when I click on "disc cleanup" I want
to do an actual disc cleanup. It asks if I want to compress old files (no I
wamt to clean up and delete them). What is the menu item that deletes the
listimg under Disc Cleanup and doesn't spend it's time compressing old
files? Thanks.

Just leave the "compress old files" box unticked. DC will still
"calculate" how much disc space can be saved but if you haven't ticked
the box it will not compress the files.

The rest is your choice, temp internet files, temp files, recycle bin
etc.

However, I would recommend that you leave "Office Set Up files" unticked
as this saves inserting Office CD if you have to do a repair.

You DON'T want to delete the "old files", at least not the ones
identified as such by "Disk Cleanup", they are only files that haven't
be accessed for some time, most of them are still needed.

Ron:
The following info has been published on a number of websites re this
issue...

When you first start Disk Cleanup (Start > All Programs > Accessories >
System Tools > Disk Cleanup) you can avoid the delay caused by the
"Scanning: Compress old files" routine when Disk Cleanup begins.

Access the Registry (Start > Run > regedit) and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
VolumeCaches\Compress old files

Delete the "Compress old files" registry key.

For most users it's unnecessary to "compress old files".

You might also want to take a look at the MS article for more background
info re compressing old files...

Anna's reply seems appropriate.

Just out of interest and I know it's not strictly related to Disc
Cleanup but when you double click My Computer and then right click Local
Disc>Properties, is the "Compress drive to save disc space" box ticked
(checked)?

No, and if I click Disc Cleanup from there it 25 sec of looking at the box
that says "Compressing Old Files"
