Beware Of "Disc Cleanup"

Had a USB drive containing my backup system images connected.

Was deleting some old images preparatory to adding some new ones.

Somewhere along the line Windows' "Disc Cleanup" dialog popped.

In a moment of weakness, I hit "Ok"....

Sheesh!!!!

It deleted a whole series of backup files as "Obsolete" or some
such.

I'm back in business from other backup sources, but geeze! Watch
out for "Disc Cleanup".

Pete,

Somehow, I'm not buying your story.

If I remember correctly, when Disc Cleanup starts, it defaults to cleaning
up the 'C drive' if you simply hit OK. For any other drive, you have to
click the drop arrow to select a different drive.

Therefore, even in your "moment of weakness", it should not have affected a
USB drive.

Besides, there is nothing to beware of regarding Disc Cleanup. You were the
problem by hitting OK without realizing what you had done. YOU need to be
more careful.

The dialog popped when I was trying to copy something to the
backup drive and there was insufficient space on the drive.

Unfortunately the camcorder in my prefrontal cortex wasn't
functioning at the time - but I'm pretty sure the dialog popped
with the backup drive pre-selected.

Hopefully I'm wrong....

That would not be a new phenom.....
YOU need to be more careful.

Worthy advice for all situations....

OP states target drive of a copy was full. I suspect "Disk Cleanup" would
pop up and offer to clean target drive in that case (never had that happen,
I think; never "okayed" the cleanup if I did have it happen). What would
have been preselected for deletion? I don't rightly know. "Recycle" bin is
the only option for "Disk Cleanup" on the two USB drives I just checked.

Sorry, I do not see where he states that.

What exactly happened is still a question. Your response if full of "I
suspect" and "What would have been" --> presumptions.

You're all talking rubbish...

By presuming on someone making an honest observation who posted his
thoughts to this group.

Then by trying to make yourselves look more knowledgeable at his expense by
clutching at the straws of your own barely remembered experiences....

The facts are that if a drive on reaching the Window's pre-defined
low-level of free space, will automatically start the "Disk Clean-up
Manager" [cleanmgr.exe] with the drive in question pre-selected.

The accusations (for that's what they were) that the OP instigated and then
had to change the default drive from [C:] to his removable drive were both
premature and wrong.
