Disaster Recovery

I'm performing a disaster recovery test of my forest, which has two domains.

In a lab environmnent, I want to build two servers, one DC for the root
domain, and another DC for the child domain.

I'm not sure if after installing the O/S on the server, do I need to dcpromo
the box and create an identical domain name/sysvol location, etc.. before
running the system state restore, or should I leave the box as a plain
standalone server with the same name, and then perform a system state
restore on to this standalone box?
