Disappearing tray icons?

Every now and then explorer blinks out and restarts. This
happens about once a day at random times. Event viewer
logs the following message:

"The shell stopped unexpectedly and explorer.exe was
restarted"

No problem - I know windows is imperfect and such
things happen from time to time.

What bothers me is that about half my tray icons disappear
after this - rebooting restores them. Do they just disappear
from the tray or have they stopped running?

They just disapear from the tray, but they keep running, but possibly not
running right. I saw a computer that was doing that, explorer would crash
and restart. If you go into task manager you'll most likely see the program
still running they just don't display anymore. I also noticed that some of
the program, although running, are not responding. Rebooting brought
everything back. This was on a computer a used for betas, demos, and all
kinds of crap software, for testing it out first. I would install and
uninstall programs all the time so I never figured out why it started and
never really looked for a fix. I tried scf /scannow but it didn't help. I
have since formatted the computer and now its fine.

To check if the programs are still running, look in the Processes tab of the
Task Manager.
