Disappearing Quick Launch icons

For some reason, my Quick Launch icons won't stay displayed. The space is
there, but all grey. If I rt-clk and select Open Folder, the shortcuts are
all there. I can copy them to the Desktop and then drag them down to the bar
again and they will stay during the session, but gone again when I reboot.
I've tried dragging the systray border up to make it taller, but icons are
not there.

Any help appreciated.

Dave

Thanks, Rey. I tried that. The referenced key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\ClassicShell

is not even there for me to delete. Does that mean I should have my admin
put it there?

WinXP Pro in corporate LAN.

So that you can take it off?

What are you thinking about?

No. That would be a little dumb. I thought maybe the goal of the KB
instruction was to delete a faulty key and let Win re-create it on reboot.
But if it doesn't need to be there at all, it's fine with me. I am no
registry wonk!

Thanks for your reply, however. Any ideas on what's causing this? I've
googled and can't find a real answer yet.

No. See this link instead:

To help you be more than "no registry wonk"... if you delete
something, it ain't coming back on its own. Like, in your current
situation: it's not THERE, so - obviously - it isn't automatically
recreated on a reboot, is it?

To bring something back... read up on System Restore (not Recovery).

No idea at all. Sorry.

Thanks again, Rey. That page doesn't seem to discuss my problem, even
though it talks about nearly everything else with the toolbar! My tool bar
is there, just icon-less.

Thanks for the advice. I'm on a corporate LAN here with somewhat limited
support for "little" problems like this, but I don't have admin rights, so
I'm limited, too, as far as System Restores, etc.

It's looking like I'll need to punt to our tech dept and see if they'll help
me.

I like the part in the article about the "phenomenon which has a
number of different possible causes" idea pertaining to QL
disappearing after rebooting.

I too have been diagnosed with a phenomenon with different possible
causes. It is cool to have a phenomenon.

Hey, Dave - can you post up a screen shot somewhere on one of those
free sites (can't put a SS here)? If I can see it, maybe I can
recreate it and find out more.

Kelly - I'm not giving you any grief at all, hopefully just a little
laugh. It is a good article.

No problem! Everyone wants to be a part of something. :o)

Still can't find the OP. Oh well, if I am reading some of this correctly -
Save settings on exit, fixes the subject line. See line 54 (right hand
side):
