same here i have this old 28.8kbps, now the solution for this is that i
have to turn on the modem first before i have to turn on my computer for it
to be detected properly on my winXP.

It's Windows. I had the same problem when I used an external modem. I
found that whenever I rebooted, I had to turn the modem off/on for it to be
recognized. If I didn't, it would show "not present" and I would have to
turn it off/on and then click "Add" and it would search but not find
anything. I would click okay and then it would pop back in. There may be
other solutions but at least this worked.

Does anyone know why, every so often, when I go to dial
up I am unable to do so. When I check under Modems in
the Control Panel, it indicates that my 3Com Sportster
V.90 PnP modem isn't present. I then get the system to
try and autodetect, but it doesn't find it.

The only way round the problem each time is to manually
install a close relative of my modem from the dropdown
list, then get an updated driver from the Net. It
started after a catastrophic shutdown a few weeks ago,
due possibly to a power surge. After that, the problem
showed up about half the time that I tried to dial out.
It now happens on about 10% of occasions, which is still
often enough to be annoying.

I have swapped from the COM2 port to COM1, and have also
tried my old 28.8 modem. Neither of these changes fixed
the problem, so it's not a faulty port or a faulty modem.

I've run out of ideas. Could the motherboard be faulty?
