Disappearing Backgrouind Screen

Hi:
I am running Windows XP Pro on a Compaq Evo N800c laptop.
Say that I have a certain background screen picture set
for my Desktop background, and the password protector on,
so that password protection is activated after a set
number of minutes of inactivity. Now, Windows screen-saver
kicks-in: I enter my password. The icons on the Desktop
show up but the background is blue (the standard
background color)
instead of the background picture I had selected in the
Display Control Panel. Sometimes the "screen size"
changes so that there are less pixels per inch.
Thus, it may be set at 1400 by 1050, and change to
640 by 480 or some resolution in-between. What is
causing the laptop to auto-change its screen settings,
and what do I need to do to prevent this from occurring ?
