Disappearing Attachments when sending

Oops try again.
I'm having a problem with attachments disappearing when sending emails.
I'm using Outlook 2003 and email format is HTML.
Recipient using Outlook Express.
I create new message and when finished I use the paperclip to insert
attachment which is a zip.
Send email and recipient receives email with no attachment. Message in sent
box has the attachment.
If I locate the same attachment file in Windows Explorer and right click -
Send to - mail recipient, new message is created with the attachment there.
I now change body of message , address and send. Recipient now receives
email with attachment.
Another profile user can send the same file to the same recipient using the
paperclip to do the attach and recipient receives attachment.
I'm very confussed - can anyone help.

Have you tried to send a test email with the same attachment to another
email address, such as a gmail.com, hotmail.com, or yahoo.com email
address? I would do this first to see if its the receiver's problem or
the sender's problem.

I will try this but I can't see it being the receiver's problem.
As I said if I create the message one way he doesn't get the attachment but
if I create it another way he does?

OK maybe I take that back.
Sent 2 emails to a hotmail address, one using the paperclip and one using
send to - mail recipient for attachment insertion.
Email attachment received in both cases.

Alright, I would ask the person if they had another email address you
could send it to them in. Its likely that either their email provider,
or maybe an anti-virus program they have, it removing those
attachments. If they don't tell them to get a hotmail or gmail account
they could use.

Hope this works for them.

I suspect that despite appearances, you're sending your message in Rich Text
format. Outlook Express cannot decode RTF messages and will ignore
attachments to that format.

Well all I can tell you is that email format is set to HTML and when I open a
new message HTML is in the title bar.

That may be, but the Contact record itself can override that value. Open
the contact record for this person and double-click the E-mail address.
This opens anotehr dialogue. At the bottom of that dialogue should be an
"Internet format" drop-down. I suspect this drop-down says "Send using
Outlook RIch Text format". If so, change it to "Let Outlook decide the best
sending format". This setting will make Outlook obey the format you see in
the compose window.

Yes you are absolutely right.
Every contact that I was experiencing the problem with had "Send using
Outlook Rich Text format" set.
Thank you very much, this had been bugging me for a long time.

You're welcome. One thing that can cause this is importing contacts.

Have the recipient using Outlook Express check under tools|options|security
tab if box is checked that reads:
"Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened which can potentially
contain a virus." If ticked, have them uncheck it and try to send your zip
again.

Thanks, Brian. Brilliant! But do we have to do that for every contact
individually, or is there a way to make them all like that by default?

I don't know of any blanket way to do that. From what I read, importing
contacts can produce an incorrect setting in that drop-down.
